Note by GAP: Kanako was diagnosed with trisomy 22, Down Syndrome in chimpanzees, and lived her entire life in a facility that was used for pharmaceutical research in Japan. With the end of research on chimpanzees in the country, between the years 2007 and 2011, the facility became a sanctuary and is now managed by Kyoto University. Read the article by one of the researchers who accompanied Kanako and joined efforts to offer the best quality of life that she could have in captivity.
